Hawassa, Sidama Region, Ethiopia

Ethiopia, with its captivating landscapes and vibrant culture, is a country of stark contrasts. Nestled in East Africa, it’s a place where ancient traditions and modern aspirations intersect. But behind this facade, a harsh reality persists. Nearly one-third of Ethiopia’s population grapples with poverty, and the country remains one of the world’s poorest, ranking 203 out of 208 nations in per capita income.

Since the turn of the millennium, Ethiopia has taken significant strides in the fight against poverty, achieving remarkable progress in areas like disease eradication and child mortality reduction. Yet, the shadow of poverty still looms large, where families struggle daily for life’s essentials and the ability to offer children a basic eduction. This is where our Ethiopia impact project steps in, driven by the goal of providing childhood education, especially to children affected by poverty, disability, gender discrimination or other hardships.

As Ethiopia’s second-highest population in Africa faces the challenges of limited resources and job opportunities, the need for our help becomes more pressing. With your support, we can make a lasting impact, turning marginalized children into stories of hope, prosperity, and brighter tomorrows. Join us in changing the lives of those who need it most.

Charitable Impact Project Ideas

Align your everyday business activities to create meaningful change and impact.

For example:

  • With each pair of hearing aids your company sells, you contribute one week of education to a deaf student.
  • Every ‘product’ sold by your company results in a one-day donation of education to a deaf student.
  • Each Christmas card you send to a client leads to a one-week donation of education for a deaf student.

Project Overview

The Visions Ethiopia Center for the Deaf in Hawassa was opened in 2019 to serve the growing population of deaf and hard-of-hearing children (and their families) in this 5th largest city in the country and its environs.

Recently, Visions registered the Visions Academy – School for the Deaf as well, starting with Kindergarten – Grade 2 classes and having plans to expand it in the coming years to offer classes up to Grade 12 to specifically serve deaf and hard-of-hearing children, hearing children of deaf adults (CODAs), nonverbal students, and other hearing children with a special interest in or connection to deafness (such as those who have a deaf sibling or relative).

The only provider of a holistic set of support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth in and around Hawassa, the capital of the Sidama Region in southern Ethiopia.
Prior to these interventions, there were essentially no services or support in the region for deaf children and their families, the vast majority of whom live in poverty or extreme poverty and are from extremely socioeconomically disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds.

  • Project Capacity
  • 62,100 Education Days
  • 270 Students

The Center currently serves 85 – 100 deaf youth in Hawassa annually, and they anticipate about 60 students (~30 of whom also access services at the Center) registered at the Academy for this first year of operations in which Kindergarten – Grade 2 classes are available. Their outreach services are currently benefitting about 140 additional deaf youth. The costs of all professional staff, including interpreters, teachers, deaf teachers, our Director, and administrative support make up the majority of related expenses, along with supplies, staff travel, rent / utilities, and other general operating expenses.

The Center and Academy have become gathering places for people with hearing loss to find community, language, support, friendship, and respect – the first of its kind in this region! The free services provided include formal Ethiopian Sign Language instruction, education (including free daily preschool) & tutoring support, interpretation services, health & audiological services, daily nutrition support, community awareness & education, livelihoods development, mentorship, and more. They also provide support to deaf children in a number of neighbouring communities (Yirgalem, Yirgacheffe, Shashemene, and Wondo Genet), especially in formal Ethiopian Sign Language instruction and academic tutoring support.

Micro Impacts represent the smallest measurable units of positive change stemming from our charitable projects. At Club Need, we deconstruct initiatives like providing clean water for a day or sheltering a family into these essential components. Each micro impact is meticulously calculated, factoring in project duration, beneficiaries, and cost.

We intentionally keep the cost of micro impacts minimal, making it affordable for businesses to create a meaningful impact. By choosing micro impacts like providing a liter of clean water for less than a cent, companies seamlessly integrate social impact into daily operations, creating a collective ripple effect for meaningful change without substantial expenses.
