Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the poorest country in Latin America and second poorest in the Western Hemisphere. Currently, over 80 percent of the 5.5 million residents are living below the $2 per day poverty line. High unemployment and underemployment have resulted in this widespread poverty and country-wide economic instability.

Listed among the Seven Horrendous Wonders of the World, Cristo Rey, a barrio on the outskirts of the capital city of Managua is home to 4000+ families that know no other life. Here they anxiously wait for the garbage trucks to bring them scraps, or scrounge through the piles of garbage in the hope that they might find something valuable they can use. Some days they are lucky enough to eat and other days they “fast”.

Here people make shelters from black plastic and whatever scraps they can find. Most homes have mud floors, no sanitation, electricity, clean running water, medical attention or educational opportunities for their children. During rainy season, the shallow latrines that families use flow onto the paths and walkways. Most children walk around barefoot in a combination of mud and human waste. Their future is bleak.

Since 2014, Club Need together with our church partner in Cristo Rey, operates several programs in the community including water, food, housing, education and healthcare.

Charitable Impact Project Ideas

Align your everyday business activities to create meaningful change and impact.

For example:

  • For every dollar of sales your business donates one litre of safe clean water.
  • For every coffee/beverage your business sells it donates one litre of safe clean water.
  • For every service (ie: dental cleaning/tax return) your business donates 100 litres of safe clean water.

Project Overview

We believe in a world where everyone has safe clean water, forever. Support the people living in Cristo Rey by giving them clean water that is absent of water-borne diseases. When people have access to clean water, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families. We work hand in hand with our dedicated project managers on-site to bring clean water solutions to this resilient community. But it doesn’t end there – we commit to sustaining these systems by partnering with local businesses to ensure ongoing maintenance and resources.

Your support matters. It will fund “water contracts” and high-grade water filters, the keys to a healthier future.

Water Contracts:
Families are burdened by the cost of  “water contracts,” especially those living on less than $2 a day. We step in to ease this burden, paying for water contracts and providing essential water pipes. Each “water contract” grants families access to distributed water for two hours daily, supplying around 160 liters of water – a lifeline for these households. We’re replacing rusty oil drums with new, contamination-resistant polyethylene plastic barrels, ensuring the water remains pure and reducing evaporation.

Water Filters:
But what about the quality of the water? We’ve got that covered too. The water in Cristo Rey may be suitable for washing, but it’s unfit for human consumption due to waterborne diseases from open pit latrines and garbage dump contaminants in the ground water. Our project includes high-grade water filter systems, capable of eliminating 99.999% of harmful contaminants. These filters are designed to last a decade with proper care, preventing waterborne illnesses that once plagued the community. Your support will provide more than just filters; it includes storage buckets, back flush kits, replacement filters, and comprehensive training to empower families to produce safe, clean water for years to come.

Micro Impacts represent the smallest measurable units of positive change stemming from our charitable projects. At Club Need, we deconstruct initiatives like providing clean water for a day or sheltering a family into these essential components. Each micro impact is meticulously calculated, factoring in project duration, beneficiaries, and cost.

We intentionally keep the cost of micro impacts minimal, making it affordable for businesses to create a meaningful impact. By choosing micro impacts like providing a liter of clean water for less than a cent, companies seamlessly integrate social impact into daily operations, creating a collective ripple effect for meaningful change without substantial expenses.
