Hawassa, Sidama Region, Ethiopia

Ethiopia, with its captivating landscapes and vibrant culture, is a country of stark contrasts. Nestled in East Africa, it’s a place where ancient traditions and modern aspirations intersect. But behind this facade, a harsh reality persists. Nearly one-third of Ethiopia’s population grapples with poverty, and the country remains one of the world’s poorest, ranking 203 out of 208 nations in per capita income.

Since the turn of the millennium, Ethiopia has taken significant strides in the fight against poverty, achieving remarkable progress in areas like disease eradication and child mortality reduction. Yet, the shadow of poverty still looms large, where families struggle daily for life’s essentials and the ability to offer children a basic eduction. This is where our Ethiopia impact project steps in, driven by the goal of providing childhood education, especially to children affected by poverty, disability, gender discrimination or other hardships.

As Ethiopia’s second-highest population in Africa faces the challenges of limited resources and job opportunities, the need for our help becomes more pressing. With your support, we can make a lasting impact, turning marginalized children into stories of hope, prosperity, and brighter tomorrows. Join us in changing the lives of those who need it most.

Charitable Impact Project Ideas

Align your everyday business activities to create meaningful change and impact.

For example:

  • For every new client at your daycare – one deaf child gains access to preschool for a week.
  • For every staff birthday – one deaf child gains access to a month of preschool.
  • For every baby stroller sold at your baby supplies store – one deaf child gains access to preschool for a week.

Project Overview

Early education in Ethiopia is uncommon and unaffordable, yet globally the benefits of accessing learning development are well known. With deaf children, there are many additional challenges to overcome, foremost of which is the lack of language and ability to communicate with even their own parents or siblings. Living without language is an isolating experience and can lead to severe restrictions or an outright inability to access formal education, health, basic public services, or social inclusion. Stigma, superstition, and social prejudice further compact this situation. The younger we can work with deaf children at the Visions Center for the Deaf in Hawassa, the better their future prospects academically, personally, and professionally in the long-term, and the more connected and empowered both deaf children and their families are.

  • Project Capacity
  • 4,600 Preschool Days
  • 20 Children

This preschool enables children with hearing loss or spoken communication disorders to develop sign language skills and to lay the foundation for their upcoming academy journey. A daily nutritional snack and meal are provided, as most children hail from food insecure families and face ongoing malnutrition issues. By attending school daily, parents (many of whom are single mothers) are also then freed up to work and earn for their families, giving them and their families a bit of economic empowerment.

Based at the Visions Center for the Deaf in Hawassa in southern Ethiopia, a free preschool for deaf children, CODAs (children of deaf adults), and nonverbal children operates daily. Donations cover the ongoing costs for classrooms, electricity, supplies, meals, cooks and teacher salaries. *This project accounts for 230 Preschool Days Per Year.

Micro Impacts represent the smallest measurable units of positive change stemming from our charitable projects. At Club Need, we deconstruct initiatives like providing clean water for a day or sheltering a family into these essential components. Each micro impact is meticulously calculated, factoring in project duration, beneficiaries, and cost.

We intentionally keep the cost of micro impacts minimal, making it affordable for businesses to create a meaningful impact. By choosing micro impacts like providing a liter of clean water for less than a cent, companies seamlessly integrate social impact into daily operations, creating a collective ripple effect for meaningful change without substantial expenses.
