Hawassa, Sidama Region, Ethiopia

Ethiopia, with its captivating landscapes and vibrant culture, is a country of stark contrasts. Nestled in East Africa, it’s a place where ancient traditions and modern aspirations intersect. But behind this facade, a harsh reality persists. Nearly one-third of Ethiopia’s population grapples with poverty, and the country remains one of the world’s poorest, ranking 203 out of 208 nations in per capita income.

Since the turn of the millennium, Ethiopia has taken significant strides in the fight against poverty, achieving remarkable progress in areas like disease eradication and child mortality reduction. Yet, the shadow of poverty still looms large, where families struggle daily for life’s essentials and the ability to offer children a basic eduction. This is where our Ethiopia impact project steps in, driven by the goal of providing childhood education, especially to children affected by poverty, disability, gender discrimination or other hardships.

As Ethiopia’s second-highest population in Africa faces the challenges of limited resources and job opportunities, the need for our help becomes more pressing. With your support, we can make a lasting impact, turning marginalized children into stories of hope, prosperity, and brighter tomorrows. Join us in changing the lives of those who need it most.

Charitable Impact Project Ideas

Align your everyday business activities to create meaningful change and impact.

For example:

  • For every “product” sold, your business provides 1 meal to a deaf student.
  • For every staff hire, your business provides 20 nutritious lunches for deaf students.
  • For every service (ie: dental cleaning/car service) your business provides 5 lunches for deaf students.

Project Overview

Nearly all the children and young adults who access the daily free support services on offer at the Visions Center for the Deaf in Hawassa live at or well below the poverty level and come from highly food insecure homes. High inflation and unemployment have compounded this issue of food insecurity, which disproportionately affects those with disabilities or families of children with special needs. Having proper nutrition allows children to attend more regularly and to focus on learning (rather than be distracted by hunger). This effort has also taken some of the financial and emotional burden off their families. Since offering this service, Visions has also invited a number of deaf adults who are experiencing homelessness or other extreme hardship to come to the Center for this service, which has not only provided them with vital nutrition, but also a place for building connection and community which is good for mental and social/emotional wellbeing.

  • Project Capacity
  • 62,00 Meals Per Year
  • 270 Children

*This projects accounts for a 46 Week School Year.

Utilizing Visions already established onsite kitchen and support staff, they are currently providing a daily nutritious snack and meal (lunch) to all the children and young adults (and some community members) who attend both the Visions Center for the Deaf and Visions Leadership Academy – School for the Deaf, both located in the city of Hawassa, the capital of the Sidama Region in southern Ethiopia. This service benefits deaf Ethiopians from preschool all the way up to adulthood, though approximately 90% of all beneficiaries are children ages 2-18.

Additionally, they plan to expand this service by providing daily nutritional support to deaf youth living in all the neighboring communities that they currently serve, as well – Shashemene, Wondo Genet, Yirgalem, and Yirgacheffe.

Micro Impacts represent the smallest measurable units of positive change stemming from our charitable projects. At Club Need, we deconstruct initiatives like providing clean water for a day or sheltering a family into these essential components. Each micro impact is meticulously calculated, factoring in project duration, beneficiaries, and cost.

We intentionally keep the cost of micro impacts minimal, making it affordable for businesses to create a meaningful impact. By choosing micro impacts like providing a liter of clean water for less than a cent, companies seamlessly integrate social impact into daily operations, creating a collective ripple effect for meaningful change without substantial expenses.
